For the First Time, Solar Approaches 60% of Grid Generation, Taking the Biggest Bite Out of Coal’s Lunch.

On a sunny and mild spring day on Sunday, the combination of large-scale and rooftop solar set new generation records while driving grid and coal demand to new lows.
The new records add to the story of a rapidly evolving grid. High levels of renewable penetration may be fleeting for the time being. Still, with dozens of gigatonnes of new wind, solar, and storage capacity set to be added in the coming years, they also tell a future story.
Big and small solar combined to set two new records for the share of total generation on Sunday, around 10.50 (grid time, which is AEST) – leaping to 59.2% and easily beating the 56.7% level reached just a day earlier on Saturday.

Australia Has Released its Federal Budget, which Includes US$16 billion in Clean Energy Investments

The newly elected Labor government in Australia has released the country’s federal budget for the next four years, which includes approximately AU$25 billion (US$16.02 billion) in clean energy investments and is intended to alleviate the cost of living pressures by increasing clean energy deployment.
That was the conclusion of the Clean Energy Council national trade association in response to the budget announced yesterday by Prime Minister Anthony Albanese’s Labor Party government, whose election in May was heralded as a “game-changer” for the country’s renewables industry.
The new budget includes the AU$20 billion Rewiring the Nation transmission upgrade initiative, which was previously announced and covered by PV Tech, as well as funding for regions to deploy renewable and low-carbon technologies.

Australia Supports Transmission Projects to Enable More Renewable Energy

The Australian government is funding the development of two major transmission projects in order to connect additional renewable energy capacity.
The Labor Party, which took office this year under Prime Minister Anthony Albanese’s leadership, is launching Rewiring the Nation, an AU$20 billion (US$12.6 billion) initiative to modernise the electric grid.
Low-cost loans were confirmed today for the Victoria-New South Wales Interconnector KerangLink project, which will increase interconnection capacity between the two states, as well as Marinus Link, which will connect Tasmania to Victoria and thus to the National Electricity Market.
