Solar Rebates and Zero-interest Loans are Now Available for New-build Homes

The Victorian Labor government has expanded the eligibility of its Solar Homes scheme once more, extending the solar PV rebate to new-build homes in an effort to get panels onto rooftops as soon and as cheaply as possible.
Victorians building a house on their own land can now apply for a $1400 rebate to install solar, as well as zero-interest loans of up to an additional $1400, according to state energy minister Lily D’Ambrosio.
D’Ambrosio claims that the changes will save homeowners up to $800 in installation costs by installing panels as new homes are wired for electricity supply, on top of the $1,073 per year that rooftop solar saves on household energy costs.

Market Operator Beefs up to Manage the Accelerating Transition to Renewables

The Australian Energy Market Operator is hailing the “beginning of a new era” as it increases its budget to support the planning, engineering, and management work required to transition Australia’s coal-dominated grid to one based on renewables and storage.
“Our world is changing at speed and scale, and ongoing change is expected to dominate Australia’s energy future,” the operator writes in its new corporate plan.
“Traditional power system operations, regulations and market functions are being challenged as the provision of secure and reliable energy become more complex.”
To help meet those challenges, AEMO has secured a significantly increased budget of $434 million, up from $314 million in the previous fiscal year, with the majority of the increase going to manage the main transmission lines.

The Australian Government Legislates for Net Zero Emissions by 2050

In a sharp departure from the previous administration, the Australian federal government proposed legislation last week that will lock in Australia’s commitment to achieve net zero emissions by 2050, as well as provide greater oversight and accountability over climate change progress.
The Climate Change Bill 2022 has four key components that lawmakers hope will catapult a country that is frequently seen as dragging its feet on climate change into a position of climate leadership.
While Australia’s previous Conservative administration committed to a net zero 2050 target, it refused to enshrine it in national legislation, a move that the country’s Clean Energy Council described at the time as “disappointing” and “unambitious.”
